Laboratory Testing

Welcome to our laboratory testing page. The labs recommended specialize in integrative functional testing. Specialized immune, hormone, cardiovascular, nutritional and genetic testing is the focus. Some labs listed are general clinical reference labs and will be noted. Health & Wellness does not sponsor or endorse these organization and they are only referred to for information and educational purposes and not for self- diagnosis of disease. You must remain under the care of your physician.

Integrative Testing Laboratories

Great Smokies Lab
www.gsdl.com

A History of Innovation
Established in 1986, Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory has helped pioneer the field of laboratory functional testing. Functional testing assesses the dynamic inter-relationship of physiological systems, thereby creating a more complete picture of one's health, unlike traditional allopathic testing, which is more concerned about the pathology of disease. By supporting the practitioner in identifying the root cause of chronic conditions, functional testing helps the practitioner to develop optimal interventions to assist patients in their quest for achieving lasting health.

Immunosciences laboratory is one of the pioneering laboratories in the field of molecular medicine, ISL analyzes complex diseases that directly or indirectly involve the human immune system. ISL is dedicated to the research and development of new biomarkers that will offer detection and prevention of chronic illnesses at the earliest possible stages. Through its unique diagnostic testing, the lab provides physicians with tools to inhibit disease progression and perhaps ultimately prevent certain occurrences. ISL offers more than 400 tests, which include detection of cancer, diabetes, Lyme disease, allergies, and a unique test for bacterial and viral agents in sexually-transmitted diseases of the reproductive system. Physicians throughout North America, South America, Europe and Australia have access to experienced ISL client service representatives who are fully informed about the company's latest testing methodologies and results analysis.

DNA AND YOU

Experience shows that when people have specific information about their individual makeup they are more able to improve their health and lifestyle. Test results provide information helpful to doctors prescribing drugs, lead to improved nutritional status, and explore individual ethnic ancestry.

DRUG REACTION TESTING
Improve the safety and effectiveness of more than one-third of the most commonly prescribed drugs such as anti depressants, heart medicines pain killers and many others. These include such important medications as Coumadin (Warfarin), Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor, Hydrocodone, Amitriptyline, Claritin, Cyclobenzaprine, Haldol, Metoprolol, Rythmol, Tagamet, Tamoxifen, Valium, Carisoprodol, Diazepam, Dilantin, Premarin, and Prevacid (and the over-the-counter drugs, Allegra, Dytuss and Tusstat). Click here to view a more complete list of drugs processed through these pathways.

NUTRITIONAL PREDISPOSITIONS
Everyone has different dietary and supplement needs. Nutrigenetic testing, combined with life style information, develops specific dietary and supplementation recommendations that can help you avoid heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

DNA Direct
www.dnadirect.com

Genetic testing offers information that can help people make informed decisions about medical management and lifestyle choices. In the current healthcare model, not everyone has access to genetic testing for a variety of reasons. As mandated by medical professional societies, genetic tests must be ordered by a physician and test results must interpreted by a genetic counselor, geneticist, or specialist. In some states, genetic testing must be accompanied by an in-person genetics evaluation and/or genetic counseling appointment. This approach is limited by the fact that there are only 1,200 medical geneticists and just over 2,000 genetic counselors in the U.S., most often based in urban areas. Many factors have created a barrier to direct-to-consumer access to genetic tests. Genetic testing results can be complex, and in some cases, do not provide a definitive “yes” or “no” answer. Some professionals fear that without face-to-face education, information will not be adequately understood, or may be misunderstood. Another concern is that direct-to-consumer marketing will exaggerate the benefits of testing and prey upon the consumer's vulnerability. DNA Direct recognizes that online genetic testing is not appropriate for all people, and it provides an innovative and responsible alternative to enable individual access to genetic testing in compliance with state and federal laws.

Specialized Blood and Hormone Testing

Rhein Labs
www.rheinlabs.com

Rhein Consulting Laboratories endeavors to provide clinicians and their patients with a rational and cost-effective approach to assessing steroid hormone levels. As opposed to saliva testing, measuring hormones in urine is widely accepted in medical and academic scientific circles as well as by clinical laboratory professionals. Results are accurate, relevant and reproducible. The relatively minor inconvenience involved in collecting specimen is a small price to pay for the security of knowing that results obtained are meaningful.

Steroid hormones in normal and pathophysiological states can be grouped into primary and secondary steroids. Primary steroids have recognized biological functions and include estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, cortisol and aldosterone. All of these are present in exceptionally low concentrations. This in turn presents significant obstacles to be overcome by the laboratory and is also one reason, amongst several others, that testing using saliva remains extremely controversial and not accepted by the vast majority of clinical scientists and physicians. Secondary hormones are those whose biological function is minor in comparison to the primary steroids and include estrone, estriol, and DHEA to name a few. A comprehensive view of 20 components gives a thorough review of the hormonal system.
